THE HAWAII HOCHI
- September 1937
.
The Hawaii Hochi (i.e. 'Hawaii News'), a
Japanese-language newspaper, was founded in 1912 by Frederick
Kinzaburo Makino to serve - and reflect the viewpoint of - Hawaii's
Japanese immigrant community.
From its very beginnings, the
Hochi presented an independent perspective on the social and
political issues impacting on Japanese Americans in Hawaii.
.
Of
course, not all the news it has carried has been of a political
nature...
On Thursday, September 30th
1937, the paper ran the following promotional news item:

This
would turn out to be only the first of a number of stories the
paper would run over the following months, focussing on a particular
individual and his time spent in the then Territory of Hawaii.
A basic English translation of the headline reads:
Reiki
Therapy's
Mr Chujiro Hayashi comes to Hawaii.
Daughter Kiyoe accompanies.
Sunday on Chichibu Maru.*
