On April 16th, 1938, Hawayo Takata set sail on the S.S. Matsonia* from Honolulu.
The S.S. Matsonia was one of four luxury ships of the Matson Line
travelling between the then 'Territory of Hawaii' and the Californian ports of San
Francisco and Los Angeles

However, when the ship arrived at San Francisco:
We can only wonder: 'Why?'

The original S.S Matsonia had been sold to an Alaskan company in 1937 and renamed 'Etolin' .
The
'Matsonia' on which Takata embarked in 1938 was another Matson Line ship, (formerly
known as the 'Malolo') which had
been
substantially rebuilt and renamed Matsonia.
